California's "Cash for Appliances" Rebate program's roll-out on Earth Day, April 22, 2010 encouraged Californians to replace and recycle their old, inefficient appliances with new, highly energy-efficient models as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Three residential appliance categories were eligible for rebates during the program including clothes washers, refrigerators, and room air conditioners. The program expanded in July 2010 to include rebates for dishwashers, freezers and HVAC and water heater systems. The program closed in December 2010, while the waiting list for HVAC and water heater systems remained open until December 2011. The entire program closed nationally in February 2012.
